Kathryn frequently travels to a few select cities where sessions have been pre-arranged. Cities she visits at least once yearly are San Diego, Palm Springs, Seattle and Calgary. Any location will be considered, based on there being enough work there to finance the trip.

“Desert Sessions“ venture to Palm Springs April 14th through 20th, 2006, is currently being booked. As with last year, we expect to have a very busy, tight schedule, so to avoid disappointment it is advised you book as soon as you can. ...more information and slideshow

San Diego
As a former resident of San Diego, this is a favorite location destination for Kathryn. San Diego is “where it all started”, Kathryn first took photography classes there and started her portfolio with the family she worked for as a nanny. Word of mouth since that time has helped her to build a loyal client following of over 100 families in San Diego.

Palm Springs
Palm Springs and the surrounding area is a newer destination for Photos By Kathryn, and was proposed by San Diego clients with friends in Palm Springs who expressed interest. The first annual “Photos By Kathryn in the Desert” trip was in February of 2005, and it went over really well.

Calgary
There has been one whirlwind trip to Calgary so far, with 10 sessions in 3 days!! Kathryn and Jen ( her lighting tech and photo assistant) flew out and all sessions were done in the beautiful, well- lit home of one generous client. We would welcome the opportunity to do it again.

Seattle
Being only a 2 hour drive away makes this the easiest location to travel to and Seattle is one of Kathryn’s favorite cities, so she is always up for the trip!

The Blunston Family ~ "Jennifer and Thayne flew Jen and I in to Calgary to capture their newborn Rhys, and their beloved dog, Jaeger. It was an absoloutley magical session, with an angelic little baby and two deliriously happy parents." ~ Kathryn

General Information

Where will the shoot take place?

Indoors is possible if you have lots of window light, outdoors if you have shade available. Most photos are close up and do not show backgrounds.
A travel fee may apply, depending on where you would like the shoot to take place and if other families are being shot in that location.

What will the photoshoot be like?

Kathryn's specialty is artistic, often close up, portraits of babies and children. Kathryn does not do traditional family portraits; instead she photographs small combinations of family moments, keeping the images very close-up and focusing on the connection and interaction between mother & son, brother & sister.
There is very little agenda or plan, resulting in photos that look natural and unposed. If you've chosen Kathryn as your photographer you are looking for something different; images of you and your family that are artful, creative, and a beautiful reflection of the personalities you love that will remain classic images for many years to come.
A gentle suggestion Kathryn has for parents is to not make a big deal of the children having their photo taken, needing to cooperate with her, etc. It is best if she can just interact with them and let them show who they are, so the photographs reflect the unposed, candid beauty of their personality.

What should I wear?

It is most important to keep dress casual, jewelry and accessories to a minimum, and your look as close to 'everyday' as possible.
As a general rule, bring anything you think might work ( a great shawl, your favorite pair of worn-in jeans) . Kathryn can help style your session, and will help you to choose the most suitable from the items that you bring.
In terms of clothing textures such as knit, linen, or denim are great. Mid to light colors are best. It's important that all clothes match in tone, even if not in co lor. In most cases skin looks better than anything so if women are comfortable wearing a top that shows shoulders & arms, and if men are comfortable taking off their shirt to hold their newborn, all the better!
For babies and young children denim is great, as is just a diaper or a onesie - showing those chubby arms and legs is the greatest! Bare feet are encouraged.

How long will it take?

Kathryn always allows 2 hours for a session. There are times that it does not take that long, but two hours is allotted so you do not feel rushed or pressured. The length of time of a shoot varies depending on how many subjects will be photographed and their ages. A pregnancy or adult shoot takes about 45 minutes to and hour and a half depending on whether you'd like make-up done and if other family members will be involved. Photoshoots involving babies and children take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours, allowing time for breaks and feeding. If your child is sick or very unhappy the day of the shoot please consider rescheduling so you can be sure of the best possible results.

How do I choose my pictures?

Your proofs will be available to see as an online slideshow within 2-4 weeks of the photo shoot. The slideshow will be available for viewing and ordering by those you provide access for 3 days. Kathryn will point out her own personal favorites for your interest, and will include suggestions re: how to make your selections. Telephone or email consultation is always available if you'd like Kathryn's assistance with this process. It is advised that you give thought before hand to what you'd like done with your photos (ie: how big, where to hang, how many to give as gifts) as this will make your decision-making process much easier!
